History of Unity
Unity was co-founded in 1889
in Kansas City, Missouri
by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore.
Charles and Myrtle Fillmore founded Unity through the inspiration they experienced from their desire for personal, physical healing.
While both of them were well-versed in world religions, it was Myrtle who initially discovered that by repeating the affirmative prayer, "I am a child of God, therefore, I do not inherit sickness," and after praying for perfect health for two years, she was healed of terminal tuberculosis. Charles used the same type of prayer that affirmed God's presence within him, and he was healed of injuries that had hampered him since childhood.
Soon, their friends began practicing affirmative prayer, the Fillmores began writing about their beliefs, and the Unity movement was born. The Fillmores did not intend for the Unity ideals to become a replacement for necessary medical treatment, nor did they foresee it evolving into a religion. But eventually, it did, as interest in these gentle metaphysical ideas grew.
Today, Unity offers: Ministerial Programs, Spiritual Education, Music Ministry Programs, Healing Retreats, and a wide variety of inspirational publications and resources to support individual and group spiritual practice.
